Cardiothoracic Surgery infrastructure development
At Kibos International Health Foundation (KIHF), we recognize that sustainable healthcare solutions require more than just medical expertise—they need strong infrastructure. Our focus on cardiothoracic surgery infrastructure development is centered around establishing and expanding the Kisii Cath-Lab, a critical facility that will provide life-saving cardiac diagnostics and interventions to underserved communities in Kenya.
Why It Matters
Cardiac catheterization labs (cath-labs) are essential for diagnosing and treating heart conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart valve disorders, and congenital heart defects. Currently, access to cath-labs in Kenya is extremely limited, especially in remote and rural areas. Many patients must travel long distances to major cities for essential procedures, delaying treatment and increasing health risks.
By developing the Kisii Cath-Lab, we are ensuring that patients in Kisii County and surrounding regions can receive timely, high-quality cardiovascular care without unnecessary barriers.
Our Approach
Building and Equipping the Kisii Cath-Lab
- We are working to establish a state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization laboratory in Kisii, outfitted with advanced diagnostic and interventional technology.
- The lab will provide angiograms, stenting, balloon angioplasty, and other critical procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases.
- By strategically situating the facility in Kisii, we bring essential services closer to thousands of patients who previously had no local access to these life-saving interventions.
Training Healthcare Professionals
- Developing cardiovascular infrastructure is not just about equipment—it’s about people. We are training local cardiologists, interventional radiologists, and medical staff to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Kisii Cath-Lab.
- Through workshops, mentorship programs, and partnerships with global cardiovascular experts, we aim to build a strong, highly skilled medical workforce dedicated to cardiac care.
Improving Access & Reducing Costs for Patients
- Many heart patients in Kenya cannot afford expensive private healthcare services. Our goal is to provide affordable, high-quality care at the Kisii Cath-Lab, ensuring that finances are not a barrier to life-saving treatment.
- By reducing the need for long-distance travel and hospital transfers, we help minimize the financial and logistical burden on patients and their families
Strengthening Kenya’s Cardiac Care Network
- The Kisii Cath-Lab is a stepping stone toward building a stronger nationwide cardiac care system in Kenya.
- We aim to establish referral networks connecting smaller clinics and hospitals to the cath-lab, ensuring seamless patient care and follow-up.
- Through partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations, we advocate for continued investment in cardiovascular health infrastructure.
Impact & Future Goals
The Kisii Cath-Lab will be a game-changer for cardiovascular care in the region, offering early diagnosis, timely intervention, and better patient outcomes for those suffering from heart disease. Our vision is to make high-quality cardiac care accessible and sustainable, ensuring that no patient is left behind due to location or financial constraints.
By investing in infrastructure, training, and accessibility, KIHF is laying the foundation for a future where advanced heart care is within reach for all Kenyans.
